Whee, 14 years at a company, and I am effectively laid off, effective… - Ldy, the lemony, ligerish ducttaparian's Magic Treehouse of Lost Thoughts
A classy broad's life... with footnotes.
Whee, 14 years at a company, and I am effectively laid off, effective Monday.

I don't think I'm going to go the Independent Contractor route. Too many headaches for too little pay.

I feel terrible for my boss. He's like family to me. I don't know how he'll pull this together without me, or even fulfill client obligations.

I guess I should worry more about me and less about the guy who just laid me off, but whatever.

Paul says ths is G-d's way of saying I should go back to school. He's got a good point.

If we can downsize a bit, UF is a great school, and cheap for residents.

Choosing a major would take a great deal of thought.

(I still don't know what to be when I grow up.)

Jooc, what do you think I'd be good at?

I'm feeling all kinds of: I'm gonna take a shower-- I'm good at that!

Ldy, I agree with Paul. I'm sorry you were laid off, but look at it as an oppertunity to study something you want to.

I want to be a parking lot owner on Cape Cod when I grow up and a ball girl for the NY Mets so... I'm probably not the person to get advice on majors and such. :)

you were talking about nutrition before.. what about that?

i'm very sorry you were laid off, but i think you'll be happy being in school. school makes me happy too.

It's funny... I never liked school. I loved knowledge, but was so socially awkward that school was a nightmare for me.

School's really Paul's dream, not mine... but I think now that I've actually gotten a few social skills under my belt, I might actually really enjoy it.

Their Food Science & Human Nutrition major is very intriguing:

I saw a guest on Colbert the other night-- Daniel Gilbert, a Harvard College Prof of Psych and author of "Stumbling on Happiness." He basically said that we, as a species, seem very ill-equipped to forecast what makes us happy. I'm finding that to be true! I just might have to buy his book. Which would make him happy, I guess ;)

I think I might be a good writer. But you know, maybe a game designer. :)

At first, all I could see was "..8888888.. ..8888888.."

Which is obviously shorthand for ...TO DIAL!

I think you'd be great at anything you put your mind to, Ib.

"Paul says ths is G-d's way of saying I should go back to school. He's got a good point."

Looking at all the people who have gone and done the things they really wanted to do after being laid off, I'm inclined to believe him.

Go for it, Carpe Diem! (as my physics teacher kept saying for some unfathomable reason)

Could be a great excuse to sit down and write a children's book.

Just sayin'. :)

Oh, what he said. The Price is usually right.

a bit late to post here, but I agree with that being a brilliant idea (andin a realm very dear to me.)

(possibly even supplemented by some good courses on children's literature)

Everything happens for a reason. It'll be cool when you figure out what the reason is. :) In the meantime, try not to stress and just go with the flow. You're lucky to have such a wonderful support system in Paul. Good luck sweets.

do you have contact info for Dan C from the theatre? Susan's husband? a week or two ago he was looking for trainable people for some sort of IT job on campus - you could have a job and take some classes for free, that way. if you don't have a way to reach him, let me know and i'll give you the info.
