I officially love my new camera.
I just took this in my backyard with my camera. No tripod. No special lenses. Minor photoshopping only to increase contrast and sharpness.

Just imagine what this thing could do if it had someone who knew what she was doing behind it!

Canon S3
ISO = 100
1/40
F4.0
Image Stabilisation (continuous)
Full optical and digital zoom
Autofocus
2816x2112 (superfine)

Icon is of a moonrise in NY state, taken with my old Olympus many years ago. The comparison is striking, no?

I'm feeling all kinds of: Now THIS is amore!
What I hear: "we love the moon" in my head

Thanks! The colour was due to the fires in and near Georgia. We're still getting ash in the air.

This camera was only about $300 ($313, I think, from Amazon). Prices on cameras overall seem to be dropping. I'm very pleased :)

Hee, I haven't played with mine much, either. I just caught sight of the beautiful red moon, and remembered that a number of people online had expressed that the S3 was great for moon photos. I used their manual settings, and then tweaked them a little. Paul seems to think a higher ISO might produce even better results (the moon was red because of atmospheric smoke), but I was getting too bitten up by mosquitoes to play with it any longer.

Yay, our cameras! :D

I've examined the picture here, and the moonrise in NY... I'm 99% sure that it is the same moon!
