I've always wanted to have a neighbor just like you.

First thing I saw when I got into work today was an email saying that Mr. Rogers had passed away.

I'm inclined to think that the world has lost someone very special. I know he was special to me.

I never had much self-esteem growing up. If it weren't for Fred Rogers, I'd probably have had none at all.

It's you I like
It's not the things you wear.
It's not the way you do your hair,
But it's you I like.

The way you are right now,
the way down deep inside you,
Not the things that hide you
Not your toys--they're just beside you.

But it's you I like.
Every part of you--
Your skin, your eyes, your feelings
Whether old or new.
I hope that you'll remember
Even when you're feeling blue
That it's you I like, it's you yourself
It's you. It's you I like.

Of course, some of that lesson did backfire when I got to the age at which I realized that Fred didn't know me at all. But as I grew into being an adult, I saw what love he had. That every child was precious. That I was precious too.

"If only you could sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to people you may never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person."

"I feel the greatest gift we can give to anybody is the gift of our honest self."

"I have a very modulated way of dealing with my anger. I have always tried to understand the other person and invariably I've discovered that somebody who rubs you the wrong way has been rubbed the wrong way many times."

"We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say 'It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.' Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes."

-- Fred Rogers

You are one of my heroes, Mr. Rogers.

I will never forget the red trolley, Daniel Striped Tiger, King Friday XIII, X the Owl, Henrietta Pussycat, Lady Elaine Fairchilde, Donkey Hodie, and your friends Mr. McFeely (Speedy Delivery!), and Lady Aberlin, and....

I will always remember that I'll never go down the drain.

It's such a good feeling to know you're alive.
It's such a happy feeling: You're growing inside.
And when you wake up ready to say,
"I think I'll make a snappy new day."
It's such a good feeling, a very good feeling.
The feeling you know that
I'll be back when the day is new
And I'll have more ideas for you.
And you'll have things you'll want to talk about.
I will too.
It's such a good feeling, a very good feeling.
The feeling you know that we're friends.

You'll always be a part of me, Mr. Fred McFeely Rogers. It is, indeed, a good feeling to have known you.

I brought my sneakers to work today. I've no idea why. I never bring my sneakers to work.

But now I'm going to go put them on.
