Look Mom, New Hands

Mom, remember oh, ten or more years ago, when you pressed $15 into my hand and told me to get a manicure because I'd enjoy it so much?

I never did it. I probably used it for partying or beer, or-- gasp-- something really silly, like utilities or rent.

I've felt rather bad about it all these years... I knew you couldn't afford to give me that money, but you wouldn't take no for an answer. And yet I squandered it on something else.

Today I finally got that manicure.

You were right. It was wonderful. The stress has been eased from my fingers... and I can still smell the lingering scent of lemongrass and tangerines. And so pretty; I think you'd like the colour.

I try to live life without regrets, but I wish I had listened to you long ago. Not only would I have discovered this small luxury earlier, but I probably would have insisted on taking you for one when you were here in the nursing home, before the opportunity had... passed away.

I love you, Mom. Thanks for the manicure : )
